Buying Wellies For Little Feet: A Guide

As parents we all know how messy children can be. Wet weather certainly doesn’t help this, and so we believe the best way to support their adventure, whilst keeping them warm and dry, is a pair of wellies! A fun fact is that Wellington boots came about when the Duke of Wellington made them popular in 1917. Wellies can be a difficult shoe to fit, especially on tiny feet, but fear not, we are here to help!
After reading this post you will feel confident about fitting and buying wellies for your little ones, we have the answer to all your questions regarding the classic Wellington boot! Let’s get going…
Do I Need To Size Up?
One main question you may have is ‘do I buy a size up?’. We know that wellies are best worn with a thick, cosy pair of socks and these may make the wellie boots tight if they are the correct size, right? Actually, wrong! With wellie boots you should stick to your child’s normal shoe size, providing this is accurate, and we have lots of information in our post: How often should you measure your child’s feet? About how frequently your child’s feet grow, with regard to their age! By sticking to the same size, you can ensure that your child’s feet are being properly supported, even with thick socks to keep their toes warm!

Are Wellies Bad For Toddlers Feet?
Another question we always get asked is whether wellies are bad for toddlers’ feet. In general, wellies tend not to be as supportive as other shoes. When toddlers are learning to walk they need the best support to aid their progress. However, in general wellies are worn on wintery walks and for splashing about, meaning that wellies are not worn all the time. As long as they are not the primary shoe the toddler is using, wellies are perfectly fine for toddlers’ feet! Here is a link to one of our favourite pairs, perfect for even the tiniest of feet! Even better – they can even go in the washing machine!
What Materials Shall I Look For In Wellies?
In terms of material, you may not know this already, but natural rubber is much more flexible and supportive than plastic. It will help to support your little one’s feet, whilst they splash about Peppa Pig style, much better. Natural rubber will shape to the curves of the foot, whilst also giving a little flexibility for running and jumping about. One of our favourite pairs of wellies made with 100% natural and flexible rubber is our SHOESME boot! They even come with a fleece sock for that extra comfort and warmth!
